Acle Clarence Norvell

Acle Clarence Norvell, 87, of Nitro went to be with the Lord Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, after a short illness.

He was born July 1, 1919, in Charleston and was the son of the late Wiley and Myrtle Norvell. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Gladys Norvell, and five brothers, Elmer, Harold, Wilbur, Woodrow and Lonnie.

He was retired from American Viscose Corporation and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of East Nitro United Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and had held other offices of the church. He was an avid fisherman and loved spending time at his camp in Pocahontas County.

He will be deeply missed by his surviving children, daughters, Sue King and her husband, James, of Poca and Carolyn Carpenter and her husband, Jerry, of Ravenswood, and son, Acle "Skip" Norvell and his wife, Helen, of Millwood; sister, Elsie Wilkerson of Fredericksburg, Va.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, whom he dearly loved. Grandchildren are Allen Carpenter and his wife, Jessika, of Portland, Ohio, Arden King and his wife, Emily, of Poca, Kristin Carpenter Smith and her husband, Doug, of Millwood, Stacy Eaton and her husband, Ryan, of Alum Creek and Brent Norvell of Nitro. Great-grandchildren are Kamille Carpenter, Austin King, Tyler Eaton, Griffin Eaton and Evan Eaton.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at East Nitro United Baptist Church, Elm and Washington Streets, Nitro, with the Rev. Robert Harrison, the Rev. Don Myers and the Rev. Ryan Eaton officiating. Burial will follow the services in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Cooke Funeral Home, 2002 20th St., Nitro.
