Velma was born in 1930 in LeClaire, Iowa, the daughter of Vivian (Dodds) and Ralph F. Criswell. She married Paul W. Leffert on July 11, 1953, in Davenport. He preceded her in death in 2002.
Velma was the Director of Nursing at the Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf, retiring in 1992. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf. She also volunteered at Neil Armstrong Elementary School in Bettendorf, was a member of a Wednesday morning Ladies' Breakfast Club, and volunteered at the Bettendorf Health Care Center. She graduated from Davenport High School, class of 1948 and the former St. Luke's School of Nursing, class of 1951.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula Leffert of Bettendorf; sons, Daniel (Vicky) Leffert of Vevey, Switzerland, Thomas (Kerri) Leffert of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Brandon, Jessica, Paige, and Travis; a brother, Frederick (Ann) Criswell of Bettendorf, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Karl and Helen Leffert of Elgin, Ill.
