Died, Friday, May 6, 1904, at his residence, one mile east of Springfield, of complications of diseases, Samuel Lewis, aged 63 years and eight months. The funeral will be held at the Third Presbyterian church. Services will be held in the Memorial Cottage in Auburn cemetery. The interment will be made in Auburn cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was proprietor of the St. Charles hotel, on Jefferson street. He was born in what is now Ball township Sept. 17, 1840, and married Emma M. Wheeler of Auburn Feb. 5, 1860. He is survived by his wife and six children, Mrs. Edith M. Barnes, Springfield; Mrs. J. T. Lagerstrom, Topeka, Kas.; Frederick E. Lewis, Springfield; Mrs. J. D. Andrews, Mattoon; Harry W. Lewis, Chicago; Bessie H. Lewis, Springfield; also one brother and two sisters, James M. Lewis, Auburn; Mrs. Elizabeth Wineman, Colorado Springs and Mrs. Sarah Armstrong, Auburn. All were present at the bedside at the time of Mr. Lewis' death except Harry W. Lewis of Chicago.

The decedent was a veteran of the civil war. He enlisted Aug. 8, 1862, in Company B, One Hundred and Fourteenth Illinois volunteers. He was captured at Guntown, Miss., in August, 1863, and taken to Andersonville prison where he suffered ten months. Mr. Lewis was discharged from the army at Camp Butler in 1865.
