John was born to William Douglas Linton and Mary Elizabeth Gordon Linton, both from Scotland. He was one of ten children; six boys and four girls. He was born in Kansas, but spent his entire adult life in the Trinity Center area, along the Trinity Center-French Gulch Road. He was a farmer. The 1900 U.S. Census states he is married, but he has no wife living with him. The 1910 states the same, but by 1920 he is divorced. However, the 1930 and 1940 censuses say he is widowed. There is no record of him having a wife living with him at any time in Trinity County.
