Capt. Carroll Fredrick “Jake” Burge, 78, of Millwood, WV, passed away March 10, 2016, at his home following an extended illness while surrounded by his family.

He was born April 3, 1937, in Millwood, and was the son of the late George Walter and Erma Geneva (Farra) Burge. In addition to his parents, his sister, Velma McDade also preceded him in death.

Jake was a retired riverboat captain with 42 years of service and was formerly employed by White Brothers and most recently by Amherst Madison.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Millwood United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mildred Marie “Mickey” Burge; sons, Charlie Burge (Penny) of Middleport, OH, and David Burge (Stephanie) of Mount Alto; daughter, Marsha Freshour (Dexter) of Millwood; brothers, John Burge of Millwood and Edwin Burge of Ripley; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two step grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, a brother-in-law Gerald McDade of Midland, PA, and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2016, at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, WV, with Pastor Vera Archer officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville, WV.
