Mr. Houle was born in Centerville, Anoka county, Minnesota, in 1869, and was a son of John B. Houle. His father was born in Canada, of French blood, and was a charcoal manufacturer. He became one of the early settlers of Anoka county. Minnesota. The grandfather of our subject was born in Canada and he brought his family to the United States and came from Duluth by wagon to Anoka county.
Our subject was reared and educated in his native place and assisted his father in improving the home farm. He went to the lumber woods at the age of’ seventeen years and followed this work for three years. About 1889 he purchased land in section 24, of Columbus township, and built a house thereon. He now owns a farm of one hundred acres, lying in two tracts, and he has sixty acres of his farm under cultivation. He has placed valuable improvements on the place and has met with success in his farming operations. He is engaged in the manufacture of charcoal and burns about 900 cords of wood per annum. He was one of the promoters and organizers of the Forest Lake Co-operative Creamery Company, and has since been one of the directors of the company. This creamery has proven a success and has been in use continuously since its establishment.
Mr. Houle was married in 1889 to Miss Matilda Blackbird, who was born in Oneka township, Washington county, Minnesota. Her parents are of French stock and became early settlers of Minnesota. To Mr. and Mrs. Houle seven children have been born, namely: Edmund, John, Walter, Harry, Orina, Roy and Theodore. All were born on the farm in Anoka county. Mr. Houle is actively interested in township affairs, and has served in various township offices for the past eight years, including supervisor and member of the school board. At present he is assessor. He is a Democrat politically and stands firmly for his convictions.
