The "STANDARD" and many in Sleaford heard on Tuesday, with keen regret, the news that Leading Aircraftman Frederick L. Bettany, RAF, only son of Mr and Mrs Bettany, of Grantham Road, Sleaford, had been reported missing, believed killed. Aged 19, Fred was an airgunner, with a squadron operating abroad. He was a members of the "Standard's" editorial staff at Sleaford, entering our Sleaford office when he left Carre's Grammar School, Sleaford, about two years ago. He volunteered for service with the Royal Air Force during the first week of the war. He took an interest in sport, and played football for the Quarrington and Sleaford Amateurs teams. His father served for many years, at home and abroad, in the medical branch of the Royal Air Force.
