Elias Hinshaw was the son of Jacob and Mary Davis Hinshaw. He was born Jan 15 1827 in Randolph Co, NC and died May 30 1893 at Rose Hill, Butler, KS.

He married Martitia Macon on April 14 1853 at Holly Sps Mtg, Randolph Co, NC. They had ten children: Isaiah Manley, Jacob Lindley, John Randolph, Stephen Frances, Thomas Benoni, Eli Newlin, George Franklin, Ahijah Goldsmith, Levi Clarkson, and Mary.

He married Mrs Elizabeth Ann Davis (pictured at right) on May 30 1880 in Hamilton Co, IN.

Elias' sister, Rhoda, and her husband, Michael and Rhoda Hinshaw Cox had moved to Iowa from North Carolina prior to the Civil War and helped pioneer the Friends settlement at Rose Hill, Kansas in 1872. Jacob Lindley Hinshaw, Elias' son moved his family from Indiana to Rose Hill in 1878, at the same time his father-in-law moved to Rose Hill. Six years later George Franklin Hinshaw persuaded his other brothers Stephen, Ahijah, and Levi Clarkson to leave Indiana and move to Rose Hill. They were all single at that time. George Franklin obtained land for himself and his brothers. Elias and his son, Isaiah, came in 1885 or 1886.
