Walter Jr. was born June 25, 1772 in Rockbridge, Virginia to Walter Sr. and Isabella McChesney. His father, Walter McChesney, Sr., came to the American colonies from Northern Ireland being one of the "Ulstermen" who migrated with their families seeking freedom from oppression and land for farming. In records Walter Jr. was referred to as "the fourth child" and youngest child, and "a good liver."
