Frederick 'Fred' Starnes Kirby

(DECATUR, Ga.) Frederick "Fred" Starnes Kirby, 73, of Decatur, Ga., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Parker Kirby; son, Timothy S. Kirby of Buford, Ga.; daughters, Nandell K. Coursey of Sugar Hill Ga., and Gloria K. Costigan of Granite Bay, Calif.; seven grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Kirby Sanders of Atlanta; and a brother, Kelly M. Kirby of Birmingham.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence J. Kirby, Robert E. Kirby, Dr. Thomas W. Kirby and Charlie R. Kirby.
He was born and raised in Woodland, son of Thomas J. Kirby and Gertrude Fincher Kirby. Fred graduated from the University of Alabama, was an enthusiastic Alabama football fan and an avid golfer. He served with the Strategic Air Command for four years and retired from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 1991. Fred was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and the Seekers Sunday School class.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. The graveside service will be at Liberty Grove Church Cemetery, Woodland, at 3 p.m. CDT.
In lieu of the flowers, donations may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Rd., Decatur, GA 30033 or Liberty Grove Church Cemetery, Woodland, AL 36280.
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Rd.
