Homer J. Brokaw died about age 74 in Wills Twp, Guernsey Co., OH. He was the son of Abraham Brokaw and Tabitha Jane Laughead. Apparently, Homer was a twin to Owen Brokaw who died a child, about age 8 in 1872. On 7 March 1888, Homer married in Guernsey Co. OH, his wife, Emma Alice Patterson. By the 1900 census, she reported being married for 12 years. Finding Emma's burial location was challenging, but thanks to the keen eye of the helpful librarian at Guernsey County Library, she seems to have been found! Lori kindly wrote "In the 1910 census, Homer and Emma's son, Albert [Brokaw] lived with his step-father, Samuel F. Fiscus, and mother in Miami County."

Emma Patterson Brokaw is buried (as per findagrave) under her 2nd husband's surname of Fiscus in Greenwood Cem., Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio. They seem to have married about 1903, since by 1910 census they reported having been married 7 years. Checking the original census, shows their location as: South Main Street, Washington Twp, Miami Co, OH. Samuel Fiscus is an iron worker. Emma Fiscus is to be the daughter of Samuel Patterson (1816/1899) and Elizabeth Payne (1827/1910) buried in Senecaville Cemetery, Guernsey County, Ohio. Emma Fiscus is indexed as Emma A. Brokaw, along with her son, Albert T. Brokaw, in the Greenwood Cemetery Index, online at the mccogs.org (Muskingum County Chapter O.G.S.) website.

In searching for the death of Samuel F. Fiscus (b. abt 1851 Pa), after the 1910 census, I had no luck with either the Piqua Health Dept, nor the Miami Co OH Health Dept; neither of these had him in their death records. Nor did he arise on the post 1913 OH Death record index via the OH Hist Soc. I also requested help from Greenwood Cemetery to check to see if Samuel F Fiscus died, say 1910-1913, and is buried near his wife...the kind woman explained that they lack any burial plot diagrams. She believes that no master index of burials exists in their office (but an alphabetized by year of death does). So the riddle continues---

Thankfully Trisha kindly phoned from Greenwood Cemetery and reported Emma to be the wife of a different man, surnamed Fiscus. She explained that Emma's obit in the local genealogy society paper files described Emma as Mrs W. Fiscus; it later is to reference this man as William Fiscus, who predeceased Emma, and who was of Avallon Heights, Warren Co. OH (at some point). So thanks Trisha! Although I have not seen this obit, it may be that ? two different Fiscus men were both married to Emma...? or some other explanation exists -- caution.
