Shirley M Tompkins Barker, age 88 of Corbin, KY, passed away Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH

She was born April 14, 1929, in Corbin, Whitley Co., KY. Her parents were: William W Tompkins and Bessie Messer Tompkins.

She married Randall D Barker on November 28, 1952. She was a graduate of Cumberland College and Eastern State Teacher's College, also earning her Master's Degree from Eastern Kentucky University. She taught for over 30 years in the Fleming-Neon, Knox County, and Corbin Independent School districts. Shirley taught 5th grade for many years in the Corbin Independent School District. Her field trips to Mammoth Cave, and "Friday Letters" are remembered by many of her former students. She was a life-long member of Central Baptist Church, and worked in the Bed Baby Department for over 50 years. She was a proud member of the National Education Association and the Corbin Education Association, of which she was president for many years. She loved cats and dogs, was an avid reader and collector of books (especially unusual ABC books) and antiques. Her favorite outings were to antique stores, flea markets and yard sales. She was a wonderful "Grammie" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: William W Tompkins and Bessie Messer Tompkins; her husband: Randall D Barker; her granddaughter: Savannah Lou Strange; her brother: James Tompkins; and her sister: Helen A Tompkins Mullins Martin.

She is survived by her daughters: Cindy Lou Barker Creech and her husband, John Donald Creech, Jr; Keely S Barker Wood and her husband, Burney Wood; and Lorie Ann Barker Strange and her husband, Mike Strange; her grandchildren: Mackenzie Creech Strickland and her husband, Matt Strickland and her great-grandsons: Caleb and Andrew; Mollie Elizabeth Creech; Kevin Wood and his wife, Scarlett Wood and her great-granddaughter: Wesleigh Anne Wood; Dr. Christopher Wood; Kelsey Wood Sledge and her husband, Spencer Sledge; Joshua Strange, Samantha Strange and Suzannah Strange; her sister: Judith A Tompkins Grove and her husband, George Thomas Grove; her brother: Eugene R Tompkins and his wife, Nancy Tompkins; her sisters-in-law: Kay Barker Sphar and her husband, Dave Sphar; Winston King and her husband, Bob New; and her brother-in-law: MSGT/Ret James Barker and his wife, Betty Barker; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Visitation: 6:00-8:00 pm, Thursday, May 25, 2017, and 2:00-4:00 pm, Friday, May 26, 2017, at O'Neil-Lawson Funeral Home, Corbin, Whitley Co., KY

Funeral: 4:00 pm, Friday, May 26, 2017 at O'Neil-Lawson Funeral Home Chapel, Corbin, Whitley Co., KY with Dr. Don Mathis and Pastor Chad Fugitt officiating. Music will be provided by Ron Green.
