Last Saturday the world lost the most amazing person I have ever known. Jeffrey William "BJ" Brown Jr. was someone who touched everyone that he came to know and will be forgotten by no one. BJ lived a rich and full life, which I will do my best to share with you. He was an amazing athlete. In his younger years, he played on baseball, basketball and soccer teams. Our stepfather, Michael Lutz, had the honor of being BJ's head coach on his Little League team. He was also an avid bike rider. In 1999, at the age of 11, he completed his first STP (Seattle to Portland) bike ride. He did it the next three years, doing the ride in only one day in 2001, with our mother, Jennifer Lutz, and Michael. I had the pleasure of finishing the ride with him and my mom in 2002. In 2005, at the age of 17, he and our mom completed the RAMROD, which is a one day ride around Mt. Rainer. He and my father, Jeffrey Brown Sr., shared a love of hiking and mountaineering. Among other accomplishments, they summited Mt. Rainer and Mt. Baker as a fund raiser to support breast cancer. He did the climb in honor of our Aunt Nelda, who is a breast cancer survivor. Both climbs were done in 2002. On two different occasions, he summited Mt. St. Helens, once with my father and I and once with my mother and stepfather. Our love of hiking began with our first trips to Wallace Falls and Tiger Mountain, which we did with my mom as kids. BJ started skiing at the age of two and went on to become an expert skier and snowboarder. Our favorite family snowboarding vacations include trips to Stevens Pass, Crystal Mountain, Mount Baker, Big Mountain and Whistler. We went on incredible family vacations, the most memorable being trips to Moclips, Washingtonand Lake Shasta, California. Water sports were another of BJ's passions. He loved the ocean. On a trip to Hawaii, our stepfather taught him to surf and he had many memorable trips to the Washington and Oregon coasts with my father. At Lake Shasta, he spent time fishing and wakeboarding, two more of his many joys and talents. In the last several years, Michael taught BJ how to hunt and he spent much of the autumn and winter hunting for ducks and upland birds along the Columbia River.
BJ had a work ethic that was unprecedented. He aspired for a career in construction management and spent the summer working as a laborer for GLY construction in Seattle. He was such a hard worker. He did perfect work and completed every project he set out to accomplish. He also excelled in school. He graduated as a member of the Bothell High School class of 2006, with his grades in the top five percent. He especially loved the subjects of math and science.
In addition to all his accomplishments, BJ was the most kind and generous person I have had the honor to share my life with. He made an effort to become friends with everyone he met, and treated everyone with the respect they deserved. He was a man with much more maturity than his 18 years. He taught me that everyone has the ability to make their dreams come true. He worked hard for everything he had and was able to achieve so much of what he desired. His car that he had saved up for since early adolescence, his Porshe Boxter, was his pride and joy. One of the most important lessons I have learned from my beloved brother is the importance of taking the time to be with your loved ones. BJ was in no hurry and took the time to tell all of his loved ones how much they meant to him.
He had so many roles in his life, beloved son, adored brother, loyal friend, and amazing boyfriend. The last months of his life were spent with Naazaneen Hodjat, his beautiful girlfriend. They shared a true and deep love that I am so glad he was able to experience. BJ had such a purpose-filled life and each of us who knew him will be able to carry on his purpose in our own way. His light will continue to shine in the hearts of those that loved him. BJ, we will always remember and love you with all of our hearts.
