Annie “Irene” was born to Annie Olsen Hansen Wheeler and William “Bill” George Wheeler, their 5th child of 8, on August 28, 1928. Home was in Richmond, Utah. Her father Bill passed away when Irene was 12 years old, leaving mom, Annie, to raise the family the best she could. The children all worked hard to support her and keep the family together until one by one, they married and left home.

Gifford went overseas to join the fight in World War II, but he didn’t forget his sweetheart back home. He came back and married his love, Irene, in June, 1946. Three children were brought into their world; Gifford “Bruce”, Barbara Ann, and ReNae. They moved to Idaho and found work in Nampa. She sweated in the potato plant, then in Boise in 1962 Irene worked as a grocery checker at Ash Market then at Warehouse Market, where in later years, she was able to travel to train cashiers and new store locations. She really enjoyed traveling. She visited Washington, DC and Disney World with her sister Marva, plus throughout her life, she went to Arizona, Hawaii, and many states in between. Her friend Janet sent her and sisters, Gwen and Donna, on a 3 week cruise through the Panama Canal around the year 2000. However, her favorite times were spent camping with her sisters’ and brothers’ families. Finally when she was worn out by the grocery work, the creative, artistic side of her got a chance to give her the pleasure she had been looking for. She became an expert at porcelain statues and glasswork such as sagging, painting on glass, and sandcarving. Irene dug into these things wholeheartedly. Irene was working on decorating plates and mugs until the last. Giff passed away in 1992, but Irene kept chugging on quite bravely and happily overall.

After battling breast cancer in 2013, Irene found out in the summer of 2015 that it had shown its ugly head again in other places. She wanted to always be here for their, Bruce, but after he was laid to rest, Irene was able to let go. Irene was extremely touched by how many visitors and phone calls she received during the last months of her life. “I can’t believe how many wonderful people come and say they love me!” she said with tears in her eyes.

Irene is survived by daughters Barbara and ReNae and her spouse Scott Porter. Bruce lost his battle with Multiple Sclerosis at age 67 this last Dec, 2015. He was buried on Dec 11th near Dad and Mom. There are 18 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren. Many of her nephews and nieces remained close. Three of her siblings have survived Irene to still be with their own families.

Irene and Gifford’s family is extremely grateful to the many friends and Maple Grove Ward members for all their generosity, support, and concern for Mom. The yard work, the blessings bestowed, the food brought in, and so many other things were such a help to us in our sad time. We Love you all.
