Marlo Z. Bowthorpe passed away peacefully on the morning of March 5, 2016, in Vernal, Utah. He was the fourth of seven children born to Alma Nephi Bowthorpe and Ida Kolb in Vernal, Utah, on Feb. 12, 1923. He grew up in the Davis area where he lived the majority of his life.
Marlo served in World War II stationed in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor. Upon returning to Vernal, he married Leona Grace Richins on Oct. 9, 1946. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake City temple on May 29, 1957.
He was a man of many talents and trades. He loved hunting, going camping, riding four-wheelers, and being around family and friends. He loved his horses and other animals and had a beautiful garden and farm. He worked at American Gilsonite for 32 years upon his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the bishopric amongst other callings. He and Leona served as temple workers in the Provo and Vernal Utah Temples.
Marlo was a man who knew exactly what he wanted and when, where, and how he wanted it. He was always dressed in his signature Levis and plaid long-sleeved western snap shirts ready to offer his opinions to all who would listen.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Leona Grace Bowthorpe; sons, Creg and Chris; two granddaughters, Brook and Kimberly Brown; one great granddaughter, Brinlee Sue Ash; and one great-great grandson, Maddix Rayne Lupcho, as well as his parents and his two brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by his three daughters, Pam (Eddie) Brown of Duchesne, Marsha Kay, Julie (Kenny) Stewart both of Vernal, and daughter in-law, Sharon Bowthorpe of Arizona; 12 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 12, at the Davis First Ward Chapel, 3990 S. 1500 E., at 2 p.m. There will be a viewing on Saturday from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at the Chapel. Interment will be at the Vernal Memorial Park with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 11 and the Utah National Guard.
