Myrtle Irene Hefner Whitener

Born to Garvin Belton Hefner and Brintie Alice Van Horn Hefner on March 27, 1933, Myrtle Irene Whitener, 81, of Conover left this world peacefully on the evening of May 12, 2014 at her home with family and loving caregivers by her side following an extended illness.

She was a member of Unity Lutheran Church in Hickory.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years Nathan J. Whitener, as well as her two children Debbie McGinnis (Lamar)of Mills River and Greg Whitener (Weatherly) of Hickory and grandchildren Chris, Nicholas and Meghan McGinnis and Shauna Whitener and husband Lee Honeycutt. Grandma Myrtle, Mawmaw, Mama will be greatly missed. Mama joins her daughter, Lori, already in God’s presence, who joined that heavenly choir five years ago and we are sure that the reunion is glorious!

Mrs. Whitener worked for Harris Teeter for many years, but her volunteer hours at Catawba Memorial Hospital were remarkable honored with over 10,000 hours of service. She also gave time freely to her church and family was of huge importance to her. Even as Dementia ravaged her mind she remembered how special family was.

Special thanks for God’s blessings of Lucy Phelps, who helped to care for Myrtle the last eight months of her life. She and her family has become part of our family. Thanks to her special niece, Alice Whitener, for her care and love to her aunt in the last weeks. Thanks also to Hospice of Catawba County.

Memorials are requested by the family for the building fund at Unity Lutheran Church, to Hospice of Catawba County.

Funeral services will be held at Unity Lutheran at 3025 Falling Creek Road, Hickory May 16 at 4:00 in the sanctuary. Visitation will be at 2:30 prior to the service in the fellowship hall at the same location. Burial will be in the Catawba Memorial Park.
