William's name sometimes appears reversed, "Joseph William." He usually went by the name "Joseph Ellis."

He was the son of Thomas Ellis (b. abt. 1808) and Jane Grogain (b. abt. 1812).

William's first wife was Caroline "Carrie" Nance. They had four children, Evelyn Virginia Ellis Glazebrook, Adeline "Addie" Ellis Oldfather (1870-1939), Frank Pierce Ellis (1876-1948), and Dexter Brooks Ellis (1882-1960). William is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City; Carrie was removed from the Salt Lake City Cemetery to Mount Olivet Cemetery.

After the death of Carrie, William married Hellen Hedges (1867-1922), who is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. They had one child, Edith J. Ellis Hull (1891-1966), presumably buried in the Los Angeles area.

According to his daughter, Edith, William was a member of the Knights of Pythias.
