The manners of the departed were original. Possessed of a mind naturally strong and persevering: it was by his own industry well cultivated. (For he was self educated.) His deportment conformed to the earlier customs of the country. Plain in dress, and unassuming in his manners, he made no pretensions to show. His temper was humane and benevolent. In the management of his affairs, he was exact and economical. His energy of character insured success in most of his undertakings.
