Retired Superior Court Clerk Anna May Vokacek died in her sleep at her Finger Lake home, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Vokacek worked for the territorial court system in Valdez until the courthouse burned and the court was moved to Anchorage. She then worked for the "floating court" around the state until 1946, when she left to be married in Kodiak. While there, she served as a U.S. commissioner a judicial appointee who served as justice of the peace, probate judge, coroner and town clerk, among other duties before going to work for Pacific Northern Airlines. According to her family, she helped set up the present-day Superior Court system in Anchorage in the fall of 1959. She was appointed the first Superior Court clerk in January 1960, and held that position until her retirement in July 1974. Mrs. Vokacek was a member of the Pioneers of Alaska, Auxiliaries #4 and #11; the American Legion Auxiliary Jack Henry Post 1; and the Palmer Moose Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Mill; her son, Jim and her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jack Jaynes, all of Wasilla; and several grandchildren.
