Addie Lenore Beall Hewitt, 99, beloved child of God, went peacefully to her heavenly home on March 2, 2016. Lenore was born on July 10th 1916, the eighth child of prominent dairyman Woodson Johnson Beall and Belle Slaughter Beall. She was born, raised and educated in the Phoenix Community of Putnam County, Georgia. She was also a graduate of Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville.
Lenore started her thirty-three year teaching career at the Imperial Mills School. It was during this time that she met her beloved Clyde, and they were married on December 24th, 1941. Because of a knee injury, Clyde was assigned state-side during World War II, and Lenore followed him around the country to bases in Texas, Idaho, and California. In 1946 they returned to Eatonton to settle and begin raising their family. Lenore returned to the classroom in 1955, first teaching a special needs class and then to first grade, where she taught at Eatonton Grammar School for 24 years. Her love and passion for children never wavered and she started each day standing before her class and quoting psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Lenore was raised in Philadelphia Methodist Church in the Phoenix Community and became a member of First United Methodist Church in Eatonton upon her marriage. She taught second grade Sunday School there for many years, was a member of the Robinson-Dance Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women Night Circle. She was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association, Phoenix Homemakers Club, and the Putnam General Hospital Auxiliary, where she could be spotted for many years every other Monday at her post as a hospital “Pink Lady.”
Lenore was known by family, friends, and the community as a loving, unselfish, and always generous Southern lady. She leaves behind a legacy of graciousness and a fierce love of her family. She was a Godly woman whose love and commitment to the Lord was evident in all that she did.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Clyde Day Hewitt, Sr., Lenore was preceded in death by her siblings: Alice, Susie, Joseph Allen, Harris, Mamie, Wattie, Edith and Margaret.
Visitation will be held at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel in Eatonton on Saturday, March 5th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
A service of celebration of Lenore’s life will be held at First United Methodist Church (Great Hall) in Eatonton on Sunday, March 6th at 3 PM.
Interment will be in Eatonton Memorial Park immediately following the service. The family suggests those who wish, may make memorial contributions to The First United Methodist Church; P.O. Box 129; Eatonton, Georgia 31024.
