Herbert left Tumbling Creek in 1917 and returned to the home of his ancestors on the Rhine to fight for the United States in World War I, where he was wounded in the Battle of Chateau-Therry. Returning to Tumbling Creek he married Beulah Mae Wills on February 26, 1922. To this union two sons were born Ezra Herbert Peeler, Jr. and Wiilam James Peeler. After the birth of William James "Bill" the family moved to McEwen where he engaged in the farming and timber operations until his retirement. Member of McEwen Church of Christ.
