The 57th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by adding five independent companies to the five companies of E.F. Keen's Battalion. Some of the men were from Powhatan, Pittsylvania, and Botetourt counties.
Married Mary Ann Craft in 1862. They had three children: Francis Young (1864), Sarah Young (1866), and Elizabeth Young (1869).
