Residence Botetourt County; an 18 year-old Farmer.
Enlisted on 5/17/1861 at Fincastle, VA., he was mustered into Captain Andrew L. Pitzer's Company Mounted Rangers "Botetourt Dragoons", Radford's Regiment Mounted Rangers as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company C, 2nd Virginia Cavalry.
Listed on Jan & Feb 1862 Roll as 3rd Corporal.
Present or accounted for on all Rolls until listed on Sept & Oct 1862 through May & June 1863 Rolls as Absent, sick at home since 9/1/1862.
Listed on March & April 1863 Roll as Reduced to Ranks, Private.
Listed as having returned to duty, Present July & Aug 1863 Roll.
Present on 6/30/1864 final Roll; no further record.

The 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment completed its organization at Lynchburg, Virginia, in May, 1861. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Bedford, Campbell, Botetourt, Amherst, Franklin, Appomattox, and Albemarle. Until the end of October the unit was called the 30th Regiment Virginia Volunteers.
The 2nd Cavalry saw action at First Manassas, in Jackson's Valley Campaign, and at Groveton Heights, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Kelly's Ford, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Aldie, Upperville, Gettysburg, and Shepherdstown. After the Bristoe and Mine Run campaigns, it was involved at The Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Haw's Shop, and Cold Harbor. It fought in the Shenandoah Valley with Early and later in numerous conflicts around Petersburg and Appomattox.
