HAZEL, HAMLIN COUNTY, SOUTH DAKOTA - 1898

CYRUS ETHAN ANDRUS, one of Hamlin County's most wide awake and industrious citizens, who is combining wagon making and farming, is making his home near the village of Hazel, of that county. He was born in Towinship Marlborough, County Carlton, Ontario, Canada, September 25, 1847.
CYRUS ETHAN ANDRUS, the subject of this sketch, left home and went to Waterville, Oneida County, NEW YORK, in December 1867, and spent that winter on a farm. He then worked at the Machinist's trade in Waterville one year. After spending a month at his Canadian home, he took up the Carpenter's trade at Waterville. In December 1869, he returned to Canada and went into the sewing machine business in Ottawa. He also worked at his trades and at farming at that place until 1880, and then moved to Hamlin County, DAKOTA. April 17 of that year, he filed a preemption claim to the Northeast Quarter of that Section 27, Township 115, Range 54, and on the 16th. Of July of the following year he homesteaded the Southeast Quarter of the same section, and filed Tree Claim papers to the Northwest Quarter of Section 34, but afterward sold the latter. He now has fifty-five acres of his farm in pasture and the rest under cultivation. He has a neat set of farm buildings and a good house, in which he, his wife and his family have one of the coziest homes in the community.

In February 1897, Cyrus Ethan Andrus entered into partnership with William HENRY in the Carriage making and Blacksmith business.

On February 19, 1873, CYRUS ETHAN ANDRUS entered into marriage with Miss JENNIE CAUGHEY, who was born November 11, 1846.
Politically our subject is a Republican and has held many of the township and school offices. He was for six years school clerk of the township and was for one term county surveyor. He was twice elected as township clerk and was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, held at SIOUX FALLS. From 1889 to June 1890, he was in California working at Bridge building and carpentering and in 1895 he made another trip to that state and spent a year there. Cyrus Ethan is a member of the Episcopal Church and is at present one of the Trustees of the Oxford Methodist Church.

CYRUS ETHAN ANDRUS left SOUTH DAKOTA in 1908 and journeyed to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he bought into the hotel business. The PALACE HOTEL was located at the corner of 9th. Ave. and Centre St. S. directly across from the Canadian Pacific Railroad station.
