MALCOLM DARROCH AITKEN, b.Nov 17 1894 in College Park, San Jose, Santa Clara, California d.Apr 29 1983 in Pacific Grove, Monterrey, California. He m.Dec 29 1923 in Lansdowne, Philadelphia Pennsylvania USA MARGARET ELGAR POWELL b.May 22 1897 in Lansdowne, Philadelphia Pennsylvania d.Feb 16 1977 in Pacific Grove, Monterrey California. {El Carmelo Cemetery perhaps?}

Malcolm's middle name, Darroch, was taken, according to oral family history, from Gaelic meaning "Dark Oak", and was the original family clan name (Sect of MacDonald clan). Supposedly the family immigrated to Germany and changed the family name to Aitken (Oaken). The 'T' in Aitken is silent.
Although officially listed as being born in San Jose, Max always said he was born in College Park. Referring to the story that at his birth, his parents lived at Lick Observatory on top of Mount Hamilton. When it was time for him to be born, the stagecoach headed down the mountain with his mother inside. Max was born in that stagecoach before reaching San Jose. He was therefore actually born in 'College Park', the park land belonging to the University of California at Berkeley.
1928 - "Who's Who in California", Malcolm was the principal of Mountain View High School 1925-1928. Served in the 67th Co., 5th Regt., U.S.M.C. in World War I. Wounded in action. Home address was 1070 California Street, Mountain View, CA.
10/29/1951 - According to his father, Robert Grant Aitken's, obituary, "Of Mountain View", (519 Hope Street, Mountain View).
1983 - According to his death certificate, Malcolm was widowed, and his parents were Robert G. Aitken and Jessie L. Thomas. He was a teacher for Mt. View Union High School District. His usual residence was 651 Sinex Avenue, Pacific Grove CA. The informant was John Aitken, son, 1020 Union Street, #14, San Francisco, CA 94123. Max died from Arteriosclerosis heart disease(20 years), and had a history of arrhythmia, and was pacemaker dependent since 1964. Cremated May 2 1983 by The Little Chapel by-the-Sea, Pacific Grove CA.
