The Rev. Joseph P. Cronin, pastor of St. Clement`s Catholic Church in Wilton Manors for nine years, died Friday in Plantation. He was 75.
Rev. Cronin, born in Waterbury, Conn., was ordained at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., on June 10, 1940.
His first assignment was as pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church in Lumberton, N.C., in 1941. He moved to Florida in 1944 to become assistant pastor of St. Mary`s Cathedral in Miami, where he stayed until 1952.
In 1952-53, Rev. Cronin was pastor of Blessed Trinity Church in Ocala. Then he served as pastor of St. Patrick`s Church in Gainesville from 1953 to 1956.
Rev. Cronin also served at churches in Palatka, Riviera Beach, and Coral Gables.
In 1959, Rev. Cronin became the first pastor of St. Pius X Church in Fort Lauderdale, but left to become pastor of St. Clement`s Church in 1963.
He became pastor of St. Patrick`s Church in Miami Beach in 1972. He stayed at St. Patrick`s until his retirement in 1981.
Rev. Cronin is survived by a niece, Eleanor O`Brien Lang of Fort Lauderdale; two nephews, Joseph Cronin of Coconut Creek, and Jay O`Brien of Boston; and a great-niece, Carroll Lang Clemens of Tampa.
Friends may call from 7 to 11 p.m. Sunday at St. Clement`s Church, 2975 N. Andrews Ave., Wilton Manors. A wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
A mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Clement`s, with Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy as the principal celebrant. Burial will be in Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery, North Lauderdale.
