He enlisted in the Marines on August 2, 1917 and served at Paris Island, South Carolina, Qauntico, Virginia and then served in the American Expeditionary Forces in France at Belleau Wood.
At one point he lay for 2 days in a trench with mustard gas being used by the other side. After some time being treated he was sent to Belleau Wood.
On June 10th, 1918 he was shot through his right lung. He spent several months in a French Hospital before he was transferred to a Naval Hospital in New York, New York.
He was discharged on December 20, 1919 and sent home to die. He was cared for by the Red Cross until his death 3 months later.
He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
