Eric Bergland joined the 57th Illinois Infantry Regiment in 1861, and served as a lieutenant with this regiment until he was mustered out in 1865. A few days before mustering out, he was appointed to the US Military Academy.

Bergland graduated from the USMA in 1869, and served in the US Army until retiring in 1896.

He married Lucy Scott McFarland on 10 Jun 1878 in Lexington, Kentucky.
