John S. Hayes

Enlisted on 9/11/1862 as a Private.
On 10/10/1862 he mustered into "G" Co. VT 13th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 7/21/1863 at Brattleboro, VT
died 12/25/1893 in Enosburgh, VT
Born in Enosburg in the year 1835. He was the son of H. D.
Hayes and Delia Snell.
He married Eliza Cutler and had by her two children, Harley and Hattie Hayes.
He has resided since the war in Enosburg and died at his home there December 26th, 1893. His two children survive him. He was a good soldier, patriotic and brave. He was pleasant and genial and added much to the life of the camp. He had a peculiar, ripling, musical laugh. Though in his tent it could be heard all over the camp and often the boys would try to imitate him.
Corporal Snell says of him, "John lived up to orders the nearest of any man I knew. He was ever ready for duty in camp or on the march. When on the march to Gettysburg he was detailed to guard our train. That kept him in the rear. On reaching Frederick he came to camp and told the captain he believed we were going to have a fight and he wanted to be in it and requested that another man be detailed to take his place. But his friends berated him. Sumner Warner called him a fool for wanting to risk his life in battle, while his uncle advised the
captain to send him back to his detail. Overborne by his
friends, he resumed his duty as guard of the trains, to his lifelong regret for that kept him out of the fight.
On his return home whenever anybody asked him if he was in the battle he would reply, 'No, I was three miles in the rear guarding a pork barrel kicked out of camp by my uncle.
He was a warm friend and a bitter enemy.'" Had his heart's desire been gratified and he been permitted to
meet the enemy face to face, his friends have no doubt he would have been among the bravest of the brave.
After the war he resumed the business of farming and lived an industrious and respectful life.
