Vernon Leon Allen of Commerce, Okla., died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at his home after an illness. He was 73.

Mr. Allen was born Sept. 20, 1935, in Commerce, Okla., to Sam Wesley and Letha Velma (Cowden) Allen. He was a 1952 graduate of Commerce High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Allen worked for B.F. Goodrich in Miami for 31 1/2 years, retiring in 1990. He later worked for Osborn Drugs for 11 years as a deliveryman. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Miami, Okla., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Miami, Okla.

He married Frances Lindstrom on July 5, 1957, in Papillion, Neb. She preceded him in death on April 4, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Eugene Allen and his wife Deanna of North Miami, Okla., and Jerry David Allen and his wife Jan of Miami, Okla.; two daughters, Kimberly Ewoldt and her husband Mike of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Kellie Kae Clark and her husband Chuck of Miami, Okla.; one brother, Thomas Wesley Allen of North Miami, Okla.; one sister, Lucille Thompson of Chetopa, Kan.; special friend, Carolyn Garren; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Miami, Okla. Pastor Leon Weece and pastor Mike Ewoldt will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Tom Panter, Kevin Panter, Steve Bashore, David Wyrick, Larry Gatewood and Robbie Rhodes. Honorary pallbearers will be Willie Osborn, Steve Grigsby, the Commerce High School class of 1952 and the Sooner Class of First Christian Church.

Interment will be in Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens of Miami.

Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Funeral Detail.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Okla.

Services are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Miami, Okla.
