Archie Miller Batson

Wiggins

Archie Miller Batson, 74, of Wiggins went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 25, 2016, on his farm in a special place that he referred to as "God's House."

A Wiggins' native, he was born to Hollis Hale and Carrie Miller Batson on September 10, 1941. He graduated from Wiggins High School in 1959, attended Perkinston Junior College and later received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry from Mississippi State University in 1964.

While in Starkville, he married Sue Shepherd of Drew, Mississippi on November 21, 1962. They made their first home in Lyman, MS. Upon their return to Wiggins, Archie continued the family tradition as a fourth- generation farmer. Archie and Sue were blessed with three children- Kim, Shep, and Brandy. With his passion for cattle farming through the establishment of ABC Cattle Company, Archie's focus became polled Brahman cattle where he set a standard in the industry that continues to be carried on today.

As a farmer, he achieved many accomplishments to include Outstanding Young Farmer in 1966 and Mississippi Cattleman of the Year in 1981. As was his nature to give, Archie served on the Stone County Fair Board and the Stone County Cattlemen's Association and was involved in the fairgrounds being moved to its present location. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Stone County Kindergarten Farm Day and Stone County Junior Livestock Association. These programs have positively influenced children for over 45 years.

Archie had a great love for his Savior and First Baptist Church of Wiggins. His servant life spanned decades to include the bus ministry, the weekday education program, actively serving as a deacon, and providing livestock for any special program, not only for the church, but the entire community. His yearly gift was the four day live nativity scene viewed by many, for over 26 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis and Carrie Batson; two brothers, Harmon Batson and J.D. Batson; and two sisters, Mary Elaine Wesson and Ernestine Blackwood.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Sue Shepherd Batson; their children, Kim (Bill) Dukes of Petal, Shep (Tracey) Batson of Wiggins, Brandy (Joby) Herrin of Wiggins, and Sam (Coretta) Herrien of Wiggins; their grandchildren, Ashton Dukes, Kelly (Natalee) Dukes, Reagan Batson, Hadley Batson, Arrah Beth Batson, MaKayla Herrin, Macon Herrin, Sammie Shade, Mario Shade, and Samantha Herrien; their great-grandchild, Karlee Dukes. He is also survived by three sisters, Nella Ruth Rogers of Perkinston, Alice Patterson of Long Beach and Jane Jackson of Benton, AR; his mother-in-law Maxine Shepherd of Drew; many nieces and nephews, a host of family and loving friends as well as his faithful furry friend, Scooter.

The family requests donations to the Archie Batson Junior Livestock Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers established at the Bank of Wiggins.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m., Monday, February 29, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Wiggins. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Wiggins and burial will be in the Thomas Price Cemetery. Moore Funeral Services in Wiggins is in charge of the arrangements.
