Joe Howard Alexander, age 80, of Lavonia, died Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Born April 28, 1935 in Hart County, he was the son of the late Clarence Joe Neil and Cleo Eunice (Whiting) Alexander. He was a 1953 graduate of Lavonia High School. He served in the National Guard. Mr. Alexander worked for Shiflet’s Grocery in Lavonia and for Wabco in Toccoa and retired from Owens Corning Fiberglass. He was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years: Geneva (Kennedy) Alexander of the home; daughter: Susan Alexander of Lavonia; brothers: Hugh Alexander and Harold Alexander both of Martin; sisters; Helen Oliver of Eastanollee and Sharon Johns of Lavonia. In-laws: Doris Bond, John Kennedy, Juanita Thompson, Lucy & Lawrence Saylor, James Kennedy, Virginia Kennedy, Dorothy & Tommy Layton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by daughter: Gwendolyn Ann Alexander; 2 infant brothers; brothers-in-law: Morris Oliver & Billy Johns; sister-in-law Shirley Alexander; father & mother-in-law: Doc & Mozelle (Ayers) Kennedy.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Josh Harvill, Rev. Adam Tripp and Rev. Mickey Umbehant officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at other times the family will be at the Alexander family home on Gumlog Road in Lavonia.
Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Building Fund 1333 Pleasant Hill Road Martin, GA 30557. Strickland Funeral Home – Lavonia Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
