Born at Salt Sulphur Springs on the farm he was raised on, which has been in the Fullen family since 1846, he was the son of the late John Elmer and Lilah Ashworth Fullen. He descended from a family of brick and stone masons, which moved from Rockbridge County, VA, in 1820 to serve as construction supervisor of the Salt Sulphur Springs Resort. All Fullens in Greenbrier and Monroe counties are their descendants. He was a lifelong farmer. His farming career was interrupted by World War II, where he served as an M.P. in the US Army in the South Pacific for several years, including Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima. Later, for many years, John and his brother, Albert, worked a variety of crops and did custom farming for a number of area farmers in an era when very few local farmers had tractors. They operated Royster-Fullen Fertilizer from 1962, buying out Royster in 1974, and operating as Fullen Fertilizer Company Inc. He also provided sales and services of Hardy outside wood-burning stoves. He was a member of the Union Lions Club, VFW, and the St John's United Methodist Church at Salt Sulphur. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jackie Ellen Fullen; one brother, Albert Ashworth Fullen; and one sister, Oretha Ann Fullen Vass. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Marguerite Fisher Fullen.
