Peter D. Shumway died Feb. 17, 2016, in Taylor at age 82. He was born in Taylor, where he lived most of his life.
Peter married Loretta Peterson of Snowflake. He was a father, farmer, servant in his church and public servant. He served as a missionary in Sweden, a bishop and the first president of the Taylor Arizona Stake.
He was elected to serve on the Navajo County Board of Supervisors for more than 20 years. He was appointed by a governor to the Arizona Water Resources Advisory Board and by another governor to the Arizona Water Commission.
He served on the board of the Snowflake-Taylor Irrigation District. He managed the reconstruction of the Daggs Reservoir, the construction of the Shoens Crossing Dam, the repair of the Lone Pine Dam and the installation of plastic pipelines in the irrigation ditches throughout the district.
He was a proud member of the U.S. Army and served in Louisiana.
Pete’s warm and good-natured optimism and his interest in serving his family, friends, church and the community, Navajo County and his state was much appreciated and a guide for serving others to all who knew him.
He and his wife Loretta are the parents of Kenneth, Steven (deceased), Lynn (Deborah), Warren (Cara), Carol (Robin) Palmer, Don (Jennifer) and Kathleen (Eric) Ritz. They are the proud grandparents of 34 and the great-grandparents of nine.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at the family’s home at 430 Lovelake Road in Taylor. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, with a viewing from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and services will begin at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center in Taylor.
Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.
