He was born June 16, 1918 in Letart, a son of the late Henry O. and Oma (Kay) Taylor.
John was a 1938 graduate of Wahama High School and a 1953 graduate of Marshall University with a master's degree in education. He began his teaching career at Hartzell Elementary and went on to teach at Roanoke, Board, Letart, Henderson and Ordnance Schools where he retired as the principal after 35 years of service.
He was a United States Army Veteran, having served during World War II. John was a member of the Smith Capehart American Legion Post #140 of New Haven, and attended the Guiding Star Advent Christian Church in Letart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Henry O. Taylor, Jr.; sisters, Velma Hoffman and Mildred Flowers; and a half sister.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Pauline (Gibbs) Taylor; his three sons, John H., Jr, Roger Taylor, and Danny Taylor; a daughter, Patsy Holland; eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; and three great, great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20, at the Foglesong-Tucker Funeral Home in Mason with Rev. Rex Young officiating. Burial followed in the Letart Evergreen Cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the American Legion Post #140 and VFW Post 9926.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Letart Asbury United Methodist Church.
