George Virgil Plauger Sr., 86, of Petersburg, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at his home.

He was born Nov. 22, 1922, at Petersburg, the son of the late Emmett Graham Plauger and Lena Alice (Keister) Plauger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Twila Rebecca (Sites) Plauger, Oct. 21, 2006; and one sister, Alice Hawse. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Plauger retired as a produce manager from the A & P Store in Petersburg. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Petersburg.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II with the 564th Field Artillery, serving in the Battle of the Bulge.

He graduated from the Spartan School of Aeronautics with a degree as parachute rigger and airline service mechanic. He was an officer with the Civil Air Patrol and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6454 of Petersburg. Mr. Plauger became a licensed pilot in 1946. He enjoyed farming and raising sheep and Hereford cattle.

Surviving are three sons, George V. Plauger Jr. of Beverly, Royce E. Plauger of Dorcas and Noah G. Plauger of Glen Burnie, Md.; one daughter, Rebecca C. Johnson of Silver Spring, Md.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one cousin, Frank Keister of Petersburg.

Family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 25, at 1 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Petersburg with the Rev. Larry M. Cantu officiating. Burial in South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens at Petersburg with military honors by the VFW Post 6454, Petersburg.
