Herman H. Stroeing

Born August 6, 1852 in Epe,* NorthRhein-Westphalia, Germany to Anton Ströing and Gertrude Benkhoff Ströing, he was given the name Johann Hermann Henrich Ströing. His name was changed to Herman Stroeing when he arrived in America.

Immigration
Around the age of 21, Herman came to America on a ship in August 1873. Herman then spent part of that year in Cincinnati, Ohio, before coming to Minnesota. Once in Stearns County, he homesteaded a 160 acre farm five miles southeast of New Munich, in Section 4 of St. Martin Township, Stearns Country, Minnesota.

Herman's sister, Adelheid Stroeing, journeyed to America shortly after him. A few years later, brother Herman & sister Adelheid saved money and had their parents, Anton Stroeing and Gertrude Benkhoff Stroeing, join them in Minnesota. On January 19, 1875, Adelheid M Stroeing married Anton Nathe in Meire Grove, Stearns County, Minnesota - where they farmed and raised their family.

Marriage
On June 6, 1882 when Herman Stroeing was 29, he married Gertrude Roering age 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, Minn. The marriage was performed by Rev Father Augustine and witnessed by Anton Nathe & Anna Roering.

Records at the Stearns County Courthouse document Hermann Stroeing renouncing the King of Prussia and pledging his allegiance to the United States. Document #2371 of District Court 7th Judicial District is dated January 14, 1897 and witnessed by Casper Eickhoff and Joseph Gieske.

Children
There were 13 children born to Herman and Gertrude (Roering) Stroeing. Nine of the 13 children lived to adulthood and the other 4 died at birth or before their 16th birthday.

Ancestorial Farm
In 1914, after 40 years of farming, Herman & Gertrude Stroeing retired & moved to New Munich, MN. The couple turned the operation of the farm over to their 4th son, Frank Stroeing. In the 1950s, the family farm was purchased by Frank's son, Vernon Stroeing. The buildings, some of which were constructed more than 100 years ago, continue to be in the ownership the Stroeing family. The structures are in the care of Randy Stroeing, son of Vernon and Margie Stroeing.

Death & Funeral
Herman Stroeing died on at 7:30pm on Friday, March 13, 1942 at his home in the village of New Munich, MN. He was 89 years old and cause of death was simply 'old age.'

Funeral was on Tuesday, March 17, 1942, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Pall Bearers were his grandsons: Alcuin, Othmar, John & Sylvester Stroeing, Virgil Benolken and Art Doll. See the obituary in the photo section for additional details.

Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude in October 1937 and 7 of his 13 children: John, Anton, Mary Ann Cremers, Elizabeth, Teresa, William "Bill" and Olivia.

Burial is in parish cemetery. Herman is buried in Row F, Plot 9 - next to his wife, Gertrude, in Plot 8.
