Joseph E. Brower, 90, of Rotonda West, FL, died on Feb. 8, 2016.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm on Sun., Mar. 6, 2016 at Rotonda West Community Church in Rotonda West, FL. Services to follow. A private family funeral will be held on Mon., Mar. 7, 2016 at Sarasota National Cemetery.

Joe went to be with his Lord and Savior after battling cancer for many years. He passed away at his home with his loved ones by his side. Joe was born and raised in Indianapolis Indiana on May 20, 1925, to Ivan and Myrtle Brower. Joe went to George Washington High School where he met and later married his high school sweetheart Carolyn Jean on May 4 over 70 years ago. Upon graduation Joe entered the Army Air Corp and served during WW II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a Staff Sargent in the 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron in which he served as a Flight Aerial Engineer. Their unit was credited for rescuing 760 men from the sea. After his service, Joe completed his degree at Purdue University and became a Mechanical Engineer. Among Joe's many gifts, he was blessed with music in his veins. Joe could sing, write, direct, and play the piano. At 15, Carolyn Jean fell in love with Joe's voice before she even saw his face. For over 65 years, Joe was the Choir Director at various churches, and a longtime devoted member of the Suncoast Chorale. Among his numerous accomplishments, he was a designer and builder of several homes and churches, taught Sunday School for over 70 years, was an active Promise Keeper, and stood in The Gap. Joe was very involved in the American Baptist Men's Association and was later appointed the President of the Ohio American Baptist Men from 1975-1976. The couple moved to Rotonda West, Florida in 1976, where they quickly embraced the new community. Joe and Carolyn Jean were both founding members of Rotonda West Community Church where Joe was an Elder and Chairman of the Board, among their many other roles. Joe was known as 'a man of God,' and 'a man of his word.' He tirelessly spent his time serving others, even up until a few weeks before his passing. Recently, Joe gifted Carolyn Jean with a tuxedo kitten for Christmas, so that she would never be alone, which she named Merry Christmas.

Joe is survived by his wife Carolyn Jean of Rotonda West, FL, daughter Sharon Winzen of Dallas, TX, daughter Dianna Hedges of Rotonda West, FL, daughter Darlene Lindsey of Rotonda West, FL, son Mark Brower of Bradenton, FL; and daughter Melodie Palmer of Sarasota, FL. Joe was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Joseph was preceded in death by his son Stephen Joseph in 1988 and his brother Bruce in 2011.
