Vera Joann Doornbos, 86 of Wichita, peacefully died Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 2016, surrounded by family and friends at her bedside in Chicago, Illinois. That day marked the end of a life filled with love, caring and learning.
Affectionately known as Joann, she was born September 9, 1929, and grew up the only child of Clayton and Ruby (Cassenburg) Boone in El Dorado.
There, Joann met Dr. John "Fred" Doornbos, with whom she would later marry and have four children.
Joann was a full-time mother for more than two decades before graduating from Wichita State University with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in child psychology.
Joann was an animal lover, excellent cook, doting grandmother and cherished mother with a quick wit and soft voice. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, John Doornbos of Wichita.
Surviving are three children, Dr. Daniel Doornbos and his wife, Mary Beth of South China, Maine, Suzanne Doornbos Kerbow and her husband, David of Chicago, Illinois, and William Doornbos and his wife, Melanie of DeWitt, Iowa. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Katie Doornbos, John Doornbos and his wife, Katie Gette, Caitlin Doornbos, Kendra Doornbos and Taylor Williams as well as three great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
