Capt. John Minor's Co. Indian Spy; Revolutionary War

Stephen Gapen was born in 1761, in Monocacy, Virginia. (Now part of Maryland, near Frederick.) He enlisted in the army in 1777, at the age of 16, at Minor's Fort on Big Whiteley Creek. He volunteered again in 1779 under Captain Philips to guard provisions at Fort Lawrence, and a third time under Lt. James Marshall in 1781-82 "for the purpose of guarding the frontiers and acting as spy back of the settlements."

He married Sarah Scott. The couple had six children: Francis, Zachariah, Stephen Manning, Judith, Matilda, and Nancy. Sarah died in 1804.

He married again, to Rebecca Snider in 1806. The couple had thirteen children: an unnamed son, Sarah, John, Joshua, Dorcas, Amos, Daniel Marchant, Ruth, Matilda, Rachel, Eunice, Elizabeth, and Thomas.

Between 1820 and 1830, he moved from Dunkard Township to Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia), where he resided until his death in 1839. He was buried in the Fort Martin Cemetary.
