Thomas William Gladden, 93, lost a courageous battle with Alzheimer's on September 18, 2006 at his home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Zachary and Emma Crisp Gladden; brothers, Pat Gladden, Jake Gladden, Hugh Gladden; sisters, Betty Hall and Julia Massengill and granddaughter-in-law, Wanda Grant.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marie Jenkins Gladden; daughters and their husbands, Jeanette and Eddie West of Three Forks, Mont., Jo and Kenneth Williams of Powell, Tenn., Sheila and Gifford Beasley of Fontana Dam, and Jane and Bill Grant of Robbinsville; brothers, Hall Gladden and Clell Gladden of Marion; grandchildren, Ray West, of Penrose, Colo., Gene Paul West of San Diego, Calif., Elaine Mejia of San Mateo, Calif., Kenna Duncan of Franklin, Tenn., Dara Wade of Andersonville, Tenn., Steven Beasley, Rusty Grant and Teresa Holder, all of Robbinsville, Marie Eskridge of Lincolnton; 11 great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
He was a lifelong resident of Graham County and a retired merchant and farmer. He had a great love for the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and "sanging." He was a master mason member of the Robbinsville Masonic Lodge and the North Shore Association. When he was well he would go with his friends to decorate the graves of families who were "on the other side of the lake." He enjoyed visitors coming to his home and had a knack for storytelling. He loved to share stories with his guests.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, with funeral services to follow at Townson-Smith Funeral Home. The Revs. Grant Burke and Gudger Jenkins will officiate. Interment will be at Yellow Branch Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Cody, Steve Beasley, Steven Duncan, Bill Eskridge, Andy Wade, Marty Holder and Matthew West. Honorary pallbearers are Gene Lancy, Eddie Marlow, Alfred Posey, Paul Cable, Vernon Burke, and Rusty Grant.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eternal Believers Church, 468 Upper Sawyers Creek Rd., Robbinsville, NC 28771 or Sweet Thoughts Alzheimer's Support Group, P.O. Box 1381, Bryson City, NC 28713.
