Stephen Mullens filed his pension application in Blount County, Alabama 13 Oct 1832, and stated that he enlisted in the Virginia State Troops in the Light Dragoons in 1779, and was discharged in 1781, about one month before the surrender of Lord Cornwallis. When he enlisted he marched from his residence in Charlotte County, Virginia, and went to Williamsburg, then to Richmond, then to Albemarle Barracks, then to James Town, and was with the army at Richmond, Williamsburg and Petersburg. He says he was never out of the state of Virginia during his service.

In June 1999, bronze markers were issued by the federal government for 45 Revolutionary War Veterans who were pioneer settlers of Blount Co., Alabama. Markers have been installed and dedicated with appropriate ceremonies. One marker, located at Remlap United Methodist Church Cemetery, Blount Co., Alabama (Township 14 South, Range 1 West, Section 13), lists Stephen Mullens, 31 Oct 1763 17 May 1833, Light Dragoons, Revolutionary War
