Perry Grove, an old citizen of this city, died at the residence of his son Shepherd Grove on Court Street on Saturday evening, July 2, 1881, aged 84 years and 5 months. Deceased was born in Fayette County, PA, February 2, 1797 where he was reared, married, and where he lived until 1842 when he moved to Perry County, Ohio. For four years he lived in Perry and Fairfield Counties and in 1846 moved to Champaign County, where he has since lived, the greater part of the time in this city until his death. Mr Grove occupied much of his life as a hotel keeper. For a number of years he was mine host of the old Ohio House that stood on the spot where now stands the Odd Fellows block. Mr Grove comes from a long lived family. Of a family of 13 children, 5 girls and 8 boys, all lived to good ages, the deceased leaving as survivors 3 brothers, aged respectively 75, 77, 79 years. Of his own immediate family, there are living Mrs Simon Beery, Mrs John H Bryant, Mrs Allen and Mrs Reeder, daughters, and William, Shepherd, Harry and JW Grove, sons.
Mr Grove was a kind hearted man, of good intentions, always aiming for the right. For 37 years he had been a member of the Presbyterian church and lived a life that no one can say naught against him as a quiet citizen. His funeral services were conducted by Rev Imhoff on Monday.
