From his photograph in uniform, Leslie Oscar Meadows Sr, family lore placed him, at age 22, in the Spanish American War in 1898. However, his military records vouch that he enlisted August 5, 1901, in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, in the 115th Company, Coast Artillery, and was discharged August 5, 1904, at Fort Rosecrans in San Diego, California. Either way, two days after his discharge in California, he married ISABELLA ZAMORANO. Leslie was Baptist and ISABELLA was Catholic. Both families objected to the marriage. Leslie returned to Texas, where he later received news that ISABELLA and her baby both died in childbirth in 1905. He never returned to California, but California records corroborate the event.
