Peggy Ann Mertz (Nee Mitchell), 61, died Monday, December 21, 2015 of complications from cancer. Raised in Laurel, MD,and a 1972 graduate of Laurel Sr High. She also attended and graduated from Texas Woman's University. Peggy had been a 14-year resident of Hampton.

She was a dedicated volunteer for the Military Affairs Committee, USO, Langley AFB, Operation Home Front, and Phoebus PTSA. Peggy is survived by her husband, Lt Col Don Mertz, USAF (Ret).; sons, Christopher Armentrout of Texas and Matthew Mertz of Hampton; and a granddaughter Katie Armentrout of Texas.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 30 at the Chapel of the Centurion, Fort Monroe. The family will receive friends Tuesday, 29 December, from 4 - 8 p.m. at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society , the Peninsula SPCA, or the Chapel of the Centurion.
