Married Fannie Mayes in Surry County, NC on 31 Oct 1897. Surname on marriage was Hays but that surname is often spelled either way in the same family.

Although death record shows born in 1865 and data was provided by son John, his marriage record shows age 24 which corresponds to his reported age 7 in the 1880 census of Grayson County, VA. The 1865 date must be incorrect.
