Marvin D. Ala died on Saturday, February 13, 2016 in Wellington, Kansas at the age of 69.
He was born the son of R.B. and Jennie Mae (Langley) Ala on Nov. 9, 1946, in Wellington, Kansas.
He graduated from Wellington High School in 1965. While a Senior in High School, he ran the projectors at the Regent Theatre and later at the Drive-in Theatre. After graduation, he was employed by Yates-Brandt Chevy-Olds to learn automobile body work under the direction of his older brother Bob Ala. Marvin worked his way up to Manager of the body shop and later managed the body shop at Les Jacobs Motors for several years. When the body shop was transitioned to AutoCrafters, Marvin decided to try the aircraft industry. He worked at Lamar for 2-3 years until he was caught up in the major lay-offs of that time and realized that he was meant to do body work. Marvin was at Merle Snider in Winfield, Kansas for about 10 years and then came back to Wellington and worked at Fritzler's Body Shop for about 15 years until he retired on April 1, 2011.
Marvin enjoyed camping and boating. In his younger years, he spent every weekend he could at the Wellington Lake and did this right up to his retirement when he finally sold his camper and boat. Marvin also enjoyed traveling and seeing the beautiful scenery that the United States had to offer. He's been as far south as Key West, Florida (Florida Keys) and as far north as Montreal, Canada. As far west as Los Angeles and San Franscisco, California to as far east as the Statue of Liberty in New York, New York. Traveling abroad, Marvin has been to London, England, Paris, France, Rome, Italy and Vatican City.
Marvin was a past president of the Kiwanis Organization and a Lions Club member. He is a member of the Nazarene Church in which he served in many positions.. He served as a Board Member, Board Secretary, Missions President, worked the sound system, church van driver, children's Bible school., caravans and was awarded the Church's Distinguished Service Award.
Survivor is son, Michael Ala and his wife Christie of Enid, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Brandon and Kiersten Ala of Enid, Oklahoma; brother, Allen Ala and his wife Jonell of Wellington, Kansas along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents R.B. and Mae Ala; brothers, Frank Eugene Ala and Bob Ala and his sister, Peggy Golden.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2016 with family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Marvin will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Nazarene Church, 702 West 8th Street, Wellington, Kansas.
Interment will follow at Sumner Memorial Gardens, Wellington, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, Marvin simply requested that his family and friends do a kind deed for someone else.
