Obituary for William L. Abbema
William L. Abbema, age 91, of South Rockwood, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016.
Friends may visit in the Arthur Bobcean Funeral Home, Flat Rock Chapel on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at Rockwood First Congregational Church 22600 Mather St., Rockwood, Michigan on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Michigan Memorial Park, Huron Township, Michigan.
Born on October 20, 1924 in Sturgis, Michigan, he was the son of William and Thelma (Miller) Abbema. On August 5, 1967 he married Nancy Fought in Ecorse, Michigan.
William served in the U.S. Navy for four years during WWII. He received the American Theatre and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
He was employed with National Steel Company as a Mechanic and pilot until retiring in 1982.
William was a member of the Rockwood First Congregational Church, Flat Rock Masonic Lodge Hiram 110 F&AM, Knights Templar, Schriners and VFW 4130 Rock of Gibraltar. He loved anything to do with aviation and was building an airplane in his garage.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving is his wife, Nancy Abbema of South Rockwood; son, William Douglas Abbema of El Tigre, Venezuela; daughter, Barbara (Willard) Willis of Pinckney; 5 grandchildren, Ashley(Vanessa), Marcy(Brian), Emily(Ben), Todd(fiance Kim) and Francesca and 8 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the Contribution: Rockwood First Congregational Church.
