She was born on February 21, 1928 at home on the family farm in Stryker, Ohio, to Cletus I. and Elizabeth A. (Wyse) Aschliman. Shirley graduated from Stryker High School in 1946. On November 22, 1950 she married Richard L. Crampton and he preceded her in death on October 16, 1992.

Upon graduation from high school, Shirley began work as a legal assistant for Judge Chauncey Newcomer in Bryan. She continued with him until his death in 1954, and subsequently worked for his son and grandson and the Newcomer law firm for 61 years, specializing in real estate and probate. She also worked for the law firm of Topper & Alloway in Columbus, Ohio for approximately 12 years while her daughters were receiving special education for the deaf. Upon her return from Columbus, she continued with the Newcomer firm, working in the Montpelier office with Bob Geesey. Shirley truly enjoyed her work and being of service. She retired in 2007. For many years, she made her home at Clear Lake, Indiana where she enjoyed hosting her children and grandchildren. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, reading and playing the piano.
