WALNUT COVE - Mr. Reuben Daniel 'Dee' Southern, 86, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Baptist Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Danny Smith officiating. A Stokes County native, Dee was born on June 3, 1926. He was a proud US Army veteran and worked as a brick mason and farmed tobacco for many years. He enjoyed participating in activities at the Walnut Cove Senior Center as long as his health allowed. Surviving are his son Steven Daniel Southern and his wife, Sandra, of Walnut Cove; daughter Debbie Matthews of East Bend; sister Alice Mabe of Walnut Cove; six grandchildren Megan Jones (Matt), Lucas Matthews (Sarah), Jamie Southern (Stephanie), Dawn Ballato (Matt), James Booth (Donna), and Natasha Davidson (Jeramie); seven great grandchildren Abigail, Caitlin, Nathan, Justin, Brittany, Ethan and Drew; a special family friends Nannie Calhoun and family; a special niece Sue Mitchell; and his beloved dog, Polly. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
